Only in Israel does Euro 2008 turn into a religo-political debate…

Only in Israel does the topic of soccer turn into a religious debate.

A conversation I participated in over the course of three days at Old Friend, with my cousin, and with my rabbi:

“Who do you think should win?  Germany or Spain?”

“Who the hell do you think I think should win?  Spain!”

“But Spain did the Inquisition!”

“Germany was more recent.”

“Really, the whole thing is Ashkenazi vs. Sepharadi, being carried out in this match.”

Ashkenaz is the Talmudic term for Germany while Sfarad is the Hebrew term for Spain.

“What are you talking about?  They’re both goyim and they both would kill Ashkenazim and Sfaradim the same way.” (talking about Jews this time).

“Well, which was worse, the Inquisition or the Holocaust?”

“The Inquisition, they tried to take our souls as well as kill us.  So it was worse.”

“You have a point.  But the Inquisition could only touch those Marranos who were legally Christians, it didn’t touch Jews.”

“Also, the Nazis tried to take our souls too.  It was psychological warfare.  You think someone could take a whole people out like that without anyone trying to revolt and it wasn’t them trying to take our souls?”

“I want Germany to win!”

“Why?!”

“Just so I could see the look on Chino’s face…”
